Membership Feb 24

Michelle Brinson (601) 734-8160 EMAIL monthly report form

Hello everyone. What a way to start the new year with so much cold, ice, and snow for much of the state! I hope everyone has recovered that we’re affected by the weather and look forward to seeing all of you in March in Gulfport for the Council of Administration/School of Instruction.
Let’s look at what Membership means to our organization but, most importantly, to our Veterans.
Membership is the lifeblood of our organization and, without members, we would not have the voice that we have and would not be able to accomplish the great things that we do in support of and for our Veterans. Without each of you and without new members, who will take care of our Veterans? It’s scary to think about, or should be. Why? Because each of you matter not
only to your Auxiliary, District, Department, and Organization, but because each of you matter to our Veterans.
Again, as a reminder, if you have officers who have not yet paid their dues for the year, in accordance with Sec. 109 of our National Bylaws, “…No officer may be relieved of their office except for the following reasons: Non-payment of dues prior to December 31.
Once relieved from office, the member may not be re-elected or appointed to any position until the member’s dues are paid…” Auxiliary presidents/Secretaries, please log in to MALTA, click on Duties, click on Reports, and click on Unpaid Members Report for your Auxiliary. If your Auxiliary has an officer who did not renew their dues by December 31, 2023,
please notify your District President along with our Department Secretary Gloria Grady, Department Treasurer Benita Lyman, Chief of Staff Laurie Williamson, and Madam President Barbara Franklin. Don’t forget, you will need to call for nominations and hold an election at your next meeting if you have not already done so to fill the vacant position(s).
This year, we need to retain 778 continuous annual members (annual members who renew or convert to a life member) compared to 840 continuous annual members last year. First, I want to say a huge “Thank You” to all of the auxiliaries who have been working retention so hard. Since December, you have renewed 76 members! As of January 30, 2024, we have
had 570 annual members renew their dues and 58 annual members convert to a life member.
So, what does this mean? This means we still have 133 annual members who have not yet renewed their dues or converted to a life member. The question we need to answer is why.
Why are we losing so many members who do not choose to renew their dues, and what can we do to change this trend and keep members active and involved? With that in mind, please be sure to continue to work hard to make contact with those annual members who have not yet renewed their dues or converted to a life member. Remember, you can generate dues reminder
notices in MALTA to mail to your annual members and/or you can reach out to them by phone, letter, text, message, email, or face-to-face. Please encourage their participation and let them know how important they are to your auxiliary, our organization, and to all Veterans and their families. Also, please be sure to remind them of the eligibility requirements for the Cancer
Grant, which are as follows: “Applicant must be a member of the VFW Auxiliary for one (1) full year and current dues must be paid…” While we all hate to lose members for any reason, we surely do not want any of our members to lose their eligibility for the cancer grant because they
are not current in paying their dues.
So far this year, we have gained 62 new annual members, 10 rejoin annual members, 22 new life members. and 2 rejoin life member for a total of 96 new members, which is up 9 new members from December. Sadly, however, we have also already lost 1 annual member and 45 life members who have passed away. As of January 28, 2024, our “Current Total” Membership (excluding our 46 deceased members) was 2,783 or 96.43% and our “Paid
Total” Membership (including our 46 deceased members) was 2,829 up 151 members from December or 98.02%.
So, Lights, Camera, Action:
Remember, this year, we are incorporating movies into our Membership Program, and we want to make it fun for all and help our Southern Conference Director win the prestigious award for Best Picture of the 2023-2024 Program Year. So, let’s all “Band Together” to help make this happen by inviting new members, investing in all members, and including current members.
Keep all members informed, encourage their participation, and get them involved in
activities/events. Have a Plan that includes:

  • Contacting current members
  • Outreach to former members;
  • Recruiting events for new members;
  • Picking a mentor for a new member;
  • Planning at least four recruiting events in your community each year.

renew your membership or convert to a life member in honor of your Veteran(s). Auxiliaries, please continue to reach out to your lapsed/unpaid members and encourage them to renew or
convert in honor of their Veteran(s) today but no later than March 31, 2024, and please continue to recruit new members into our organization. Let’s continue to honor our Veterans, our Service men and women, their families, our communities, and our organization by keeping our membership current, being involved/active, and by asking others to join. Remember, our membership and service matter–You matter and, by “Banding Together,” we can do so much for those who have sacrificed and done so much for our Country and for all of us. What is the VFW Auxiliary Outreach Program?

  • Auxiliary Outreach involves Auxiliaries volunteering to help nonprofit organizations, local groups and to
    address needs in your community.
  • Focus is on volunteering, not monetary or in-kind donations.
  • Partnership where one or more Auxiliary members help another organization or group to make their project
    successful.

The first step in making your Auxiliary Outreach Program successful is reaching into your
community.
Here are a few other basic steps:

  • Find local groups and organizations in need of assistance.
  • Ask what your Auxiliary can do to help them.
  • Vote at an Auxiliary meeting to approve the activity.
  • Form a partnership.
  • Report the details.

Suggestions for VFW Auxiliary Outreach

  • Assist with local fundraising walks as a volunteer, not an entrant.
  • Help your local library by working at book fairs.
  • Assist with local youth activities and at senior centers.
  • Help your town or city during elections but remain nonpartisan.

Benefits of the Auxiliary Outreach Program

  • Helping others
  • Learning new skills
  • Meeting new people
  • Developing a sense of purpose
  • Personal growth

Always Remember to

  • Wear your VFW Auxiliary attire (name badge, shirt, hat, jacket, etc.)
  • Report the number of hours volunteered.

WOO HOO!!!!  Y’all rock at loving Veterans, Active duty and your communities!

About the challenge put to your Auxiliary (see below)….y’all still have time to publish what your Auxiliary and Post did during November & December. Make sure to bring it to me at Mid Winter.

Yes we want to know what y’all have been up to all year – however, the amazing things that were done during a time of the year that most are being selfish with “I have so much to do for me” your Auxiliary and Post stepped up and took care of your local Veterans, children in your community, families that just needed a hand up,

  • donated to food banks
  • worked tirelessly for Toys for Tots
  • packed care packages for our deployed service members
  • held fundraisers so you could make care packages for our Veterans in the VA homes
  • teamed up with your Post to give gift cards so many in your community could have Christmas dinner
  • opened your Post and served a holiday meal, laid thousands of wreaths the whole state of Mississippi on our departed Veterans graves
  • baked and cooked cookies
  • pies and cakes for our Veterans
  • adopted Veterans from the VA nursing home to make their Christmas wish list come true
  • worked with community partners to help the homeless
  • visited with patients in nursing homes
  • stuffed backpacks for VA delivery
  • held Christmas breakfast for the community complete with Santa pictures
  • held Christmas party for customer appreciation
  • donated to local Church pantry
  • held a taco bar for Veterans from VA
  • grocery shopping for the month for a Marine and 4 children
  • donated blankets to the local human society
  • gave blankets to Veterans at the nursing home
  • adopted Veterans in the nursing homes
  • donated personal care buckets to the homeless through the Sherriff department
  • represented the VFW & Auxiliary in Christmas parades
  • personally delivered Christmas stockings
  • donated books about Veterans to local schools
  • and to start the month of December off y’all took a moment to go to the VA and nursing homes to decorate Christmas tress.

All I can really say is how humbled I am to call you Sister and Brother! Your selfless during the holidays (and all year round) is part of who we are in being a member of the greatest Veterans organization on the face of the earth!

You are SPECTACULAR!!  May God Bless you each and everyday of the New Year that is ahead –

Carol Fetters, Auxiliary 228-596-5014 Email Monthly Report Form

Welcome to the New Year!

There are many exciting things for our veterans this year.

This year’s National theme “Banding Together for our Veterans”, and the Department of Mississippi’s theme, “Soaring Above and Beyond for Veterans” is the lifeblood of the Hospital Program. The volunteer efforts of our members and working together will make a huge difference in the lives of our hospitalized veterans.

CELEBRATING NON-TRADITIONAL HOLIDAYS

As we continue through the months, our National Hospital Ambassador would still like for all volunteers to think outside the box in organizing “fun” for our veterans. Our veterans love celebrating traditional holidays, but so do all the organizations who support our veterans. Maybe they would also enjoy celebrating some non-traditional holidays. Some of these January holidays are:

Jan. 10 – National Bitter Sweet Chocolate Day

Jan. 12 – National Hot Tea Day

Jan. 16 – National Fig Newton Day

Jan. 17 – National Popeye Day

Jan. 23 – National Pie Day

Jan. 26 – National Peanut Brittle Day

Jan. 31 – National Hot Chocolate Day

If your VA hospital or Nursing Home allows your auxiliary to visit the veterans on any of these days, think about doing and preparing some of these non-traditional holidays!

These non-traditional holidays are an excellent chance to show your veterans something different to celebrate. Make sure you take care of their caretakers also.

UPCOMING EVENTS

VALENTINES FOR VETERANS

Share the love we have for our veterans and service members this Valentine’s Day by sending a valentine, hosting a party, recognition event or dinner in their honor.

NATIONAL SALUTE TO VETERAN PATIENTS

The week of February 14 is your opportunity to thank a special group of men and women who are cared for throughout the Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) medical centers, outpatient clinics and nursing homes. The purpose of the National Salute to Veteran Patients program is to pay tribute and express appreciation to veterans, increase community awareness of the role of the VA medical center and encourage citizens to visit hospitalized veterans and become more involved as volunteers. Our hospital volunteers contribute to VA personnel and patients. It is because of volunteers like you who bring a touch of happiness to those veterans’ faces.

You might also be thinking about The Awards that can be obtained by filling out the applications in the VFW Malta Member Resources.

1 Citation to the VFW Auxiliary member in each of the 10 Program Divisions who recruits the most Hospital (VA and non-VA facilities) volunteers from July 1, 2023, to March 31, 2024. Entry form (required) available on MALTA Member Resources. Citations to be mailed directly to winners after National Convention.

“Soaring Above and Beyond for Our Veterans”

Hello to all Super Supporters!

During the last days of this year we should reflect on the many blessings that we have shared as well as received.  I share my gratitude for all of our auxiliary members who have enriched the lives of our veterans, their families and our active duty members.  Be loud and be proud of all you have accomplished, from that one small thing to many big things or events.  It all matters to a veteran or their family and that is our goal with this program. I love hearing about all the big things that are reported on, especially at Christmas but do not forget to let me know if you only made a phone call to a veteran because it is more than JUST a call to that veteran.

As we continue to work together, doing all the wonderful things that you do for our veterans, I urge you to report on any and all of what you are doing in support of our veterans. The report is short and you can call, text a message or picture, email or snail mail a report form to me.

I am deeply grateful for each of you.  I wish you and your families much love, joy and peace in the coming year and that you always share that with our veterans.

“Banding Together for Our Veterans”

I am always available to you for any questions or to help with reports.

HAPPY NEW YEAR! I hope that everyone had a wonderful Holiday Season and is ready to get back to work. The next few months are going to be very busy.

Please make sure you are submitting your scholarship reports monthly. You can submit them online at vfwauxms.com, send them by email or text, or even send them by snail mail. Please just get them in so that they can be counted.

Please remind your members at your January meeting that the applications for the Continuing Education Scholarship are due Feb 15. The application and short essay must be at National Headquarters by that date.

This is the time to really ramp up your promotion of the Young American Patriotic Art Contest and the 3-D Patriotic Art Contest. If you sent information to schools and youth organizations, please take time to call or email to remind them of the deadline, March 31. There are press releases in MALTA that can be placed in your local papers that give details about the contests. Make use of all the tools available to you through MALTA. March 31 will be here before you know it.

I hope that you are planning some sort of recognition for your Post and Auxiliary Scholarship winners. I know many of you have your winners present their projects at a VFW event, but also consider presenting their award during the Awards Day ceremony at their school so that their peers can appreciate their accomplishment too. It’s a very good way to promote our scholarships and develop relationships with school personnel that would be willing to help with the programs next year.

With the new year, let’s reaffirm our commitment as VFW Auxiliary Members and really work to promote these scholarships. Our youth is our future and without them we cannot continue as an organization.

Ho Ho Ho and I hope everyone had a very Merry Christmas and a healthy one. HAPPY NEW YEAR!!!! and may this year be a very healthy one to all.

Well, what can one say this year that we all haven’t heard a hundred times? How are our kids and what are we doing to instill patriotism and love of country?

Well, were there any parties that we hosted for them and promoted Americanism, brotherhood, what does America mean to me, why I’m proud to be an American and thankful to be from America? I don’t think so but I hope I’ve given you ‘food’ for thought. During January and February would be a great time to do this because of one of the greatest leaders of our times was born on January 15th, Martin Luther King Jr. and Presidents Day is February 19th. I know that some of you will visit the schools in your community and host events that will commemorate these wonder leaders of our country.

There are a few items at the VFW store to help you make a splash with the children and there are numerous ways to celebrate the day, and you can also distribute the Department coloring contest pages while you’re there. For those who don’t have them, they can be found on the ‘Youth’ section of the reports forms. We’ll announce a deadline at the Mid-Winter conference in January.

Please remember, I accept reports on any type of paper and any way you send them, Department forms, web page, emails, snail mail and carrier pigeon to name a few. You can also message me at 228-990-6969.

For those of you that are working with our future leaders, hats off to you and keep up the good work, I know it will pay off in time.

Until next time, be safe and carry membership applications at all times, you never know when you might meet someone to recruit.

This year, we need to retain 778 continuous annual members (annual members who renew or convert to a life member) compared to 840 continuous annual members last year. So far this year, we have gained 59 new annual members, 7 rejoin annual members, 20 new life members. and 1 rejoin life member for a total of 87 new members. Sadly, however, we have also already lost 1 annual member and 43 life members who have passed away. I have had the honor to work with you and have seen what all of you have done for the past 2 years and what you have done so far this year, and I believe that we can reach our goals! The New Year is fast approaching and what an amazing gift it would be to renew your membership or convert to a life member in honor of your Veteran(s). Auxiliaries, please continue to reach out to your lapsed/unpaid members and encourage them to renew or
convert in honor of their Veteran(s) today but no later than January 31, 2024. Let’s continue to honor our Veterans, our Service men and women, their families, our communities, and our organization by keeping our membership current, being involved/active, and by asking others to join. Remember, our membership and service matter–You matter and, by “Banding
Together,” we can do so much for those who have sacrificed and done so much for our Country and for all of us. God bless our Veterans, Service Members, their families, our organization, our department, and all of you. Hope to see all of you in Tupelo.

Auxiliary Outreach Dec23

Deborah Turner (601) 506-9430 Email report form

Our programs are designed to bring needed services, information, and assistance to these target groups. Veterans, service members, their families, and our communities.

Volunteering is second nature for VFW Auxiliary members. It’s what we do, how we do it, where we do it and why we do it – because it’s always the right thing to do.

While emphasis is placed on our core VFW and Auxiliary Programs, Auxiliaries also partner with other community organizations. Auxiliaries can report and be recognized for such community work through the Auxiliary Outreach Program.

When an entire Auxiliary partners with another organization outside our own, it is considered Auxiliary Outreach if the project was approved by the Auxiliary and recorded in the meeting minutes prior to the project. Search your community for great partnerships.

For example:

An individual can cook for and feed several Homeless Veterans and people in the community and that’s honorable but if you partner with and established soup kitchen it can mean feeding hundreds per day and that is making a difference on a much larger scale.

Other examples include:

Working with local police on child ID kits.

Working with firefighters on fire safety and prevention.

Working with EMTs to host CPR training.

Handing out food at soup kitchens.

Partnering with an animal shelter to hold a spay and neuter clinic.

Auxiliaries are responsible for so many good deeds that help our communities. VFW Auxiliary members work with other organizations in their communities, often individually, and often behind the scenes, but Auxiliary Outreach gives us the opportunity to work together as members alongside members of another organization to do more with local communities and to be recognized in doing so. Collectively, all our projects need to be counted to effectively show the importance of the local VFW and VFW Auxiliary to the community.

Thanks for all you do. Don’t hesitate to contact me.

HEY MISSISSIPPI!!! Lets get something going on!!

The Historian & Media Relations Program encompasses memory keeping and collecting the five Ws: the who-what-where-when and-why of an Auxiliary. Members involved with this program compile and chronicle memories and events in written format, photographs, memorabilia and print news/video clips. They also spread the word about our valuable National Programs and share how we are making a positive impact in the lives of veterans, service members and their families in thousands of communities across the country. (off National website)

You are the one in your Auxiliary to reach out to all of the media sources in your area.  A list of media resources in Mississippi. If you have a contact that you would like to add to the list, or find data that needs to be updated, email it to me so we can keep this list updated for the future.
