TOOT! TOOT!

(Ship-speak for “Merry Christmas!”)

It’s Christmas time already!

I want to wish everyone a very Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year from my family to yours. I pray that you all have a safe and happy holiday with family and friends.

By this time Voice of Democracy and Patriot’s Pen winners have been selected by area VFW Posts and have gone on for judging at the district level. Most districts have already chosen their winners, which will now go on to the Department level. Best of luck to all the young people who submitted entries and shared their ideas and beliefs on democracy and patriotism with our veterans.

Our next scholarship deadline is coming up February 15, 2025. It’s the Continuing Education Scholarship for VFW Auxiliary members and their immediate family members. Remember that the auxiliary member must have been a member for at least 1 year. Only their immediate family members (self, spouse, and children) are eligible to apply. Four (4) recipients are chosen each year by the National VFW Auxiliary. Each of these recipients represents the four conferences in the VFW and its Auxiliary: Big 10, Southern, Western, and Eastern. The award amount is $1250 and is paid directly to the university, college, or trade school of the recipient’s choice.

I would like to ask that you encourage local youth, grades 9-12 to apply for the Young American Creative Patriotic Art Contest and the 3-Dimensional Patriotic Art Contest. Go online to MALTA, under Resources, and request brochures that give more details of these two contests. These brochures are sent to you free of charge. Share the brochures with local art teachers, church youth leaders, youth organizations, and your family members in grades 9-12. This is another great opportunity for our youth to demonstrate their patriotic values.

Just a friendly reminder of future deadlines:

· February 15, 2025 – Continuing Education Scholarship for VFW Auxiliary members and immediate family (spouse and children)

· March 31, 2025 – Young American Creative Patriotic Art Contest (grades 9-12)

· March 31, 2025 – 3-Dimensional Patriotic Art Contest (grades 9-12)

Hospital Dec 24

Hoping everyone had a safe, healthy and great time with the family and friends during the Thanksgiving holiday, and now what do we have in mind for our veterans for the Christmas season?

At the Community Living Center in Biloxi VA Hospital, I spied a Christmas tree with Angels as the decorations. Upon closer inspection, the angels were ‘Santa’ request for gifts from the veterans. Do you have such a ‘tree’ in your facility? I thought that was pretty cool, request coming from adults. On second thought, why not? They can’t get out and shop for things they need and we are able to grant some of their wishes. Why not ‘adopt’ some of these veterans? Their request were simple things like shaving cream, T shirts, shower gel, candy. In the past, we have ‘stuffed’ toilet tissue tubes with candy, hand towel tubes with tooth brush and tooth paste, discarded medicine bottles with first aid supplies and sewing kits.

The list is endless and I have my information at the close of this bulletin for any other ideas you can come up with and we can share them. I love hearing from you. We can also sign all the cards you receive in the mail that you will never use and bring them to the hospital or nursing homes to the elderly or shut-ins in your community. Hospital work is not all done at the Veterans Hospital or the Veterans Home. I found out about a private home that houses 5 wheelchair bound veterans and we are decorating large shoe boxes and filling them with goodies. (And they don’t even know the boxes are coming) Can’t wait to see the looks on their faces. But I don’t have to tell you about helping our true heroes.

You have been doing a great job in your respective areas with all you do now. This is the season for giving to others and who else would be more grateful for our giving efforts? Lets keep in mind this season those who are less fortunate and make their holiday extra special with a visit and a smile on your face, believe it or not, you’ll come away with a really good feeling. Until next year, be safe, be healthy and enjoy the holidays with friends and family.

God bless America and God bless out veterans.

Yours in service to our true heroes,

Betty P. Doucet Ashmus

Youth Activities Dec 24

Beth Crow 662-522-9481 email

Merry Christmas, everyone! I can’t believe that 2024 is almost over. I know that you all have had some wonderful youth activities at your post or in the community. I need a favor from you all. Please send some pictures of your youth activities to me. I would love to create a collage of all the great things Mississippi is doing with its young people. You can email them to me at email.

I’ll share SWAP with you from District 6 Auxiliary. For Veterans Day, they did a program at the Attala Co. Library. District Commander Grayce Powell was their guest. A patriotic book was read and they taught the children how to salute and pledge the flag. There are plans for additional programs at the library in the future.

I’m getting lots of reports from different auxiliaries. However, there really isn’t room on the report form to expound on the details of your events. So, if you would, please send me an email about your youth events. I would love to feature a SWAP in each newsletter. And don’t forget you can submit your reading programs for the national citation.

Publicity – Know Your Methods

Hello,

I am writing to inform you about the various publicity methods that
our organization uses to engage with the media.

Introduce yourself and the organization to members of the media (TV Stations, Newspapers)

We regularly introduce ourselves and our organization to members of
the media, including TV stations and newspapers. This helps to build
relationships and ensure that they are aware of our work.

Submit news releases to the medias on a regular basis

We also submit news releases to the media on a regular basis. These
releases provide information about our latest activities and
achievements.

Contact the media when something unique or unexpected happens

In addition, we contact the media when something unique or unexpected
happens within our organization. This could include a major event, a
newsworthy development, or a significant achievement.

Designate a contact that the media can get the information from

We have designated a specific contact person who is responsible for
providing information to the media. This ensures that all media
inquiries are handled promptly and efficiently.

Let email be the contact tool to the TV stations, newspapers, and other publications

We primarily use email as our contact tool for TV stations,
newspapers, and other publications. This allows us to communicate
quickly and easily with the media.

Recognize all the media in your area

We recognize all the media outlets in our area and maintain
relationships with them. This helps to ensure that our news releases
and other communications are widely distributed.

Maintain all social media outlets (i.e., Facebook, Instagram)

We also maintain a presence on all major social media platforms, such
as Facebook and Instagram. This allows us to connect with the public
and share information about our organization.

Seasons Greetings & Happy Holidays “Y’all

Youth Nov 24

Beth Crow 662-522-9481 email

Happy Thanksgiving, everyone. I can’t believe it’s November already. The year has just flown. I want to remind you that your Coloring Contest entries are due at the Auxiliary level on Oct 31. Please judge them at the Auxiliary level and send your winners to me by December 1st. I will get them judged and present prizes at Mid-Winter Convention in January.

November is full of holidays that present opportunities for us to interact with our young people. These are just a few. If you Google you can find many more.

National Author’s Day is Nov. 1. Why not share a favorite childhood author with a group of children.

Nov. 7 is National Hug a Bear Day. Invite children to bring their Teddy and have a Teddy Bear Tea Party with Hot Cocoa and Cookies.

Veterans Day is Nov 11. There are many opportunities to incorporate young people in our Veterans Day Celebrations. It is a time to teach our young people what being a veteran means and is always appreciated by our Veterans.

Thanksgiving is Nov. 28. There are so many opportunities to incorporate Thanksgiving into our Youth Program. Crafts for the younger children. Organize a food drive and let the older children help pack food boxes for the needy or homeless. The possibilities are limitless.

Please make sure you are contacting your schools, church groups, and children’s organizations about our Illustrating America Contest. March will be here before you know it. And don’t forget about our Reading in the Classroom Program. As always, please make sure you report any youth program activity on our report form at vfwauxms.org.

Thank you for all that you do.

Auxiliary Outreach Nov 24

Michele Brinson 901-734-8160 email

It was so good seeing so many of you this past weekend in Gulfport, but we sure missed those of you who couldn’t be there with us. As you know, this year’s theme is From Our Roots to Our Branches, Extending Service To Our Veterans (and to their families, our communities, and to organizations within our communities). I’m happy to report that many of our auxiliaries are doing some pretty amazing things when it comes to Auxiliary Outreach. However, I feel certain that so many more of you are also doing some amazing outreach activities that you may not have reported yet; especially, in light of the recent devastation from Hurricanes Helene and Milton that affected so many of our fellow Americans, friends, and family throughout the southeastern United States. So, let’s take another look at what Auxiliary Outreach is and what your auxiliary can do to help make a difference and to help others.

Steps to a Successful Auxiliary Outreach Project: –

Vote and approve a motion to provide assistance and partner with other organizations in your community in your meeting and record that approval in your meeting minutes. Approval should occur prior to the outreach activity except on rare occasions such as a natural disaster or emergency. You can do this where it covers all activities/ partnerships for the entire year or prior to each activity/partnership as they occur.

– Partner with organizations that could use assistance.

– At least one Auxiliary member must participate in order to be counted as auxiliary outreach, and projects may be done by only the Auxiliary or together with the VFW Post.

– Wear VFW Auxiliary attire while participating (shirt, hat, name badge, lanyard, etc.).

– Take pictures of all the amazing things you are doing in your communities and share with other auxiliaries, your Department Historian, National Headquarters, and with me.

– Count all volunteer hours (but not monetary donations).

– Share information about the VFW Auxiliary; i.e., what we do, why we do it, how someone can become a member, etc. What’s Considered Auxiliary Outreach:

 – Projects not affiliated with the VFW or VFW Auxiliary.

– Volunteer your time to collect needed items for organizations who serve the community.

– Participate in walks that benefit other organizations such as an event spotter, water station volunteer, timekeeper, etc.

– Partner with animal shelters by volunteering to help clean kennels, walk animals, collect bedding, cleaning supplies, dog/cat food, leashes, etc.

 – Partner with homeless shelters by serving food, bussing tables, cleaning up, etc.

– Partner with food pantries/banks or Meals on Wheels to stock shelves, pack food boxes, serve food, pass out food boxes, deliver meals, etc.

– Partner with the Red Cross or other groups at their blood drives. – Partner with organizations that provide clothing, household goods, furniture, appliances, bedding, etc., by sorting items, passing out items, collecting needed items, etc.; such as House of Grace, Hope Ministries, Sacred Heart, etc.

– Partner with organizations that provide medical equipment; i.e., wheelchairs, crutches, walkers, etc., by collecting needed items.

– Partner with a church hosting a community-wide event Easter egg hunt, trunk or treat, breakfast with Santa; Vacation Bible School, fall festivals, health screenings, etc.

Auxiliary Outreach Program Award:

Most outstanding photo collage created by the VFW Auxiliary of their auxiliary Outreach partnerships during the current Program Year. Citation and $25 to one VFW Auxiliary in each of the 10 Program Divisions that creates the most outstanding photo collage of their VFW Auxiliary partnerships during the current Program Year.

I want to say “thank you” to Auxiliaries 3253, 3373, 3962, 4272, 4934, 5395, 5397, 6731, 7531, and 12124 for all that you are doing and for reporting your activities. Please if you have pictures of your auxiliary activities, send them to me and also to our Historian, Lisa D. Mayer-Thompson. In fact, I would love to see a report and pictures from every Auxiliary and to be able to share all that you are doing to help our communities and others in need. I know many of you have helped with Hurricane Helene and Hurricane Milton relief efforts not only coordinated by our organization but also through other organizations within our communities such as Southern Thunder Harley Davidson, Operation Freedom’s Reach, Difference Maker Ministry; through local churches, etc., by collecting, sorting, packing, and/or transporting donated items to those affected by these devastating storms. Please remember to report the hours spent volunteering and performing these activities. For those auxiliaries who have not yet submitted a report, please feel free to contact me with any questions you may have or if you need assistance. Yours in Service

Hospital Nov 24

Hello all! Did everyone have fun and learn something at the Council meeting? It was a great learning experience for some. Now that Halloween is over and all the candy has been given out…..go back to the store and get some more. It’s time to go to the VA and nursing homes for Bingo, parties, dinners and…Thanksgiving. We need treats for all our patients. And not only treats, but lap blankets, caps, socks etc… How many of you are going to your local nursing home or Veterans Hospital for the holidays? Your smiles will be a welcome sight. AND you may not be able to visit the homes or hospitals but you can do things at home to help bring joy to those in the facilities. Can you sign some of those holidays cards you receive that you don’t need? Can you help sew coverings and pockets for the wheelchairs and walkers, or make lap blankets from home and give to your fellow sisters and brothers to take with them on their next visit? There are plenty of ways to help from your home. If you had time on your hands, it would be a great neighborly thing to ask a close veteran or caregiver to offer them a ride to their next appointment. The caregiver might need a short break for that day. Think outside the box. We never know what will work til we try. If you would like to volunteer on a regular or even occasional basis, call me and I will set you up. Till next time, have a safe, healthy holiday and get out and VOTE!

Yours in service to our true heroes.

November is a month of reverence and respect. We owe our Veterans, past and present a debt of gratitude and love.
November 11th is Veterans Day. Please take time to take a meal or a book or sit with a Veteran and give them your best moments full of grace and love. After all, that’s why we are free – Some gave all but ALL gave some 💕💕🙏
